Did you know you can appear on googles search engine even if you dont have a website? And if you have a lawn care website, here is a tip that you really need to take advantage of. The best part about all of this, is that its FREE. Its amazing what you can learn when you read the Gopher Lawn Care Business Forum.

Google has a section on their search engine called the Local Business Center. Do a quick search on google to find it.

Within that section you can add your business to their list and what that will do is bring your business listing to the top of the search engine result page where the map appears.

One of our forum members had added his lawn care business to this FREE listing and here is what he said I just wanted to let you guys know im #3 on the first page of google and this is the third day after I filled out the information. Isnt that fantastic?

Another forum member tried this and wrote Hey everyone I just wanted to let everyone know that I logged onto the google local business center and put in all my info and it has been fantastic. I put in all the services I provide and almost everyone comes up first when you search for the service and my area.

I have only been on one week and received three calls for big jobs.

Now you might be wondering how do you add your information to this site? Here are some directions a forum member shared with us.

* Next on the left hand side you will see put your business on Google maps. Click
* Then create a new account.
* Remember to put as many keywords as possible to promote yourself.
* It should do the same for you as it has done for me.]

Try this out and you should see your lawn care business start to appear at the top of search engines.

Walk the lawn before you bid or this might happen.

With the advent of google maps and other similar services, your lawn care business might feel more inclined now to pull up an overhead map of a new customers home to review their yard. Once you calculate the dimensions of the property, you may even feel compelled to give the new lawn care customer a price quote over the phone to mow their lawn, site unseen.

Here is a prime example of why you shouldnt do that.

Curtis shared with us a story on the Gopher Lawn Care Business Forum of how he ran into a problem giving a customer a lawn care bid without first walking the property. He wrote I just learned a valuable lesson - NEVER estimate a yard via your countys GIS system or Google Maps (getting measurements online).

I had a new lawn care customer call me who lives on a local school campus. She wanted just lawn mowing & trimming. I saw she lived on .32 acres - I told her $25.00 weekly. I got to her house with my brother in law and found the lawn to be WAY overgrown. The grass was up to my knees and I am 5?9?. The job took us an hour to knock it down. I should have charged her at least double!

She said that they moved in nine months ago and just now realized that they were required to mow their own lawn.

So remember, always visit the property and walk the lawn first before you give the lawn care customer an estimate for mowing or you may find yourself shocked as well.

http://www.gopherforum.com I was having a great discussion on the Gopher Lawn Care Business Forum with my friend Jeff and he was sharing with me some of his experiences trying to market his lawn care business. You can read more on this lawn care business discussion here on the GopherHaul Lawn Care Business Forum.

Jeff: When I worked with the previous lawn care business employer they did a lot of telephone soliciting and door hanger marketing. Here in our part of the state, almost all the towns limit door knocking and require that you go to the town hall or police station, pay for a background check, and wait for a permit until the background check comes back. Therefore, we didnt do much of that. So we would hang door hangers saying things like, Check out your neighbors yard. Doesnt it look great? Dont you want your yard to look that good? Then we would get their phone number out of a reverse directory and call them until they threatened to call the police.

Now I go out and hang lawn care door hangers marketing my materials. I generally try to do that on weekends hoping that Ill catch someone working out in there yard. Again, I use the soft sell technique. Generally, something like, wouldnt you rather be spending time doing something else right now? If theres kids around I use that to my advantage. I have kids of my own and I say things like, they wont be this small for long, trust me. Quit spending your weekends working in your yard. I can free up your weekend for $XX.XX, but your son/daughters childhood is priceless. In fact Im trying to figure out how to put that last statement into a door hanger. Kind of like the Mastercard commercial. Anyone with any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

So after playing around with a few ideas I came up with this lawn care business door hanger design. You can download it for free and try it out. Let me know what type of results you get.

Remember when you are out working, distribute your door hangers using the clover leaf lawn care marketing technique. Get your door hanger on a few houses to each side of the home you are mowing as well as hang the lawn care door hangers on a few houses across the street. This is the best way to maximize your time and add more lawn care customers to your route.

You can put together a great looking site but people need to find it when they are searching for lawn service. How do you get your site to appear when a potential customer is looking for lawn care service? You need to know what they are looking for and you need to give them what they want. The keyword here, is keywords!

What are your keywords? Well say for instance you lived in Denver, Co and offered lawn care. A potential customer is most likely going to be looking for Denver Lawn Care or Denver lawn maintenance. If you are unsure of what your keywords should be, ask your friends or family, what words they would search for to find a local lawn care business online and go with the words you hear most often in response. I would think you would want to keep the keyword count to a minimum, maybe 4 or so.
Your ideal keyword count should be between 10% and 20% of the total word count of your site, so ask yourself, where are you ranking?

To figure this out do the following.

* Right click on your websites main page and then left click on select all.
* Open up your word processor and then paste the text into a new document.
* Use the word count feature of your word processor to show you the total word count of your webpage.
* Then do a search and see how many times each of your keywords appear.
* (total word count) divided by (keyword count) will give you the percentage.

Try this out and see how you are doing.

Now lets see how it is put to use. A new forum member posted an introduction and asked a great question I used a Gopher lawn care business web template from this site to create my lawn care company website and just got it on the net earlier this morning. How can I attract potential customers to my website?

You are not going to believe this example I am about to show you but its real. Matt has done such a great job with key words and having other sites link to his lawn care website that he appears in 7 out of the top 10 search results. Thats right! You heard right! In fact, if you were competing with him in his area, the chances of a new customer finding you are next to nothing because most people will not go beyond the first 10 results to their search.
Matt: When people to a search for lawn service or lawn care in my area I am usually have all 7 slots out of 10 or sometimes 8 slots out of 10 on the search engine. Do a search for lawn care in dothan on google and you will see.

You will see a bunch of J & M Lawn Care links. Also I am located in the local business directory.

This is just so outstanding!
